As I think about the phrase “the will of God”, I often
wonder if we misuse it a lot. I have noticed it being used a lot lately, and I
wonder if we have forgotten what it means and how powerful of a phrase it is.
One way I have being hearing it a lot is which career choice people are taking.
What career choice is God’s will for different people. I was talking to my
Grandma about this, and she told me something very interesting and true. She
said that it doesn’t matter what career path you take as long as it God
glorifying and you can be a light and example to others. Our job here on this
earth is to bring others to Christ. It doesn’t matter what career you have as
long as you are doing that. Sometimes I think we are being very selfish and
self-focused when we think we need God to tell us exactly what career we should
go into or anything similar to that. Some verses I have thought of that talk
about God’s will are 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Romans 12:2, and Ephesians 6:6.
In every
thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of
God.
Romans
12:2
Not with
eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of
God from the heart;
Ephesians
6:6
Notice
that nothing in these verses focuses on us. They are all focused on Christ and
others. That is what God’s will for our lives is, to be servants for Christ and others.
